Ketamine is prescribed off-label and is not FDA-approved for any psychiatric condition. Any discussion of research or patient experiences below is educational and not a promise of results. A licensed clinician determines whether ketamine may be appropriate for you.

As mental health challenges rise, more people are asking about ketamine therapy, which some clinicians prescribe off-label when depression hasn't improved with standard treatment. Ketamine is not FDA-approved for any psychiatric condition. California isn't on our list of confirmed at-home ketamine states, so call (702) 848-2256 before booking a ketamine visit. Our ketamine page lists the states where at-home ketamine is confirmed.

Sublingual Ketamine Troches

Where our at-home program is offered, it uses sublingual ketamine troches: a needle-free alternative to IV infusions that you take at home under your clinician’s plan.

How Ketamine Therapy Works: Insights for California Residents

Ketamine acts on the brain’s glutamate system (NMDA receptors), and researchers are studying its effects on neuroplasticity. Research is ongoing, and individual response varies. In randomized trials of a single IV ketamine infusion for treatment-resistant depression, some patients' symptoms eased within hours to days (Zarate 2006; Murrough 2013). Those trials used IV infusions. Evidence for at-home dosing is more limited, and results vary from person to person.

Sublingual troches dissolve under the tongue, so no IV is needed. Where it's offered, this approach can reduce the need for clinic visits. You take the medication yourself at home, with a peer support adult present; no clinician is in the room.

Ketamine is a Schedule III controlled substance with real risks. Possible effects include dissociation, dizziness, nausea, and raised blood pressure and heart rate. The FDA lists abuse and misuse, psychiatric events, slowed breathing, and bladder and urinary tract symptoms, and has warned that using compounded ketamine at home, without a clinician on site to watch for sedation, dissociation and blood pressure changes, may put patients at risk (FDA). The ketamine label also warns that repeated use can injure the liver and bile ducts (Ketalar label). Our ketamine page covers the risks and who isn't a candidate.

At-home ketamine therapy isn't crisis care. If you're thinking about suicide or are in crisis, call or text 988, or call 911.

Common Questions About Ketamine Therapy in California Answered

Is ketamine therapy legal in California?

Ketamine is a legal prescription medication. It is a Schedule III controlled substance, so only a DEA-registered clinician can prescribe it, and prescribing it for a psychiatric condition is off-label. California isn't on our list of confirmed at-home ketamine states, so call (702) 848-2256 before booking a ketamine visit.

Does insurance cover ketamine therapy in California?

Insurance can cover the visits when your plan is in network with your clinician. We don't bill insurance for compounded ketamine; you pay the pharmacy directly. Spravato® is a separate program, given in person at our Las Vegas clinic.

How much does ketamine therapy cost in California?

Visits are $150 each if you self-pay, for the first visit and for follow-ups. If ketamine is prescribed, you pay the compounding pharmacy directly for the medication, and the pharmacy sets the price.

What are the side effects of ketamine therapy?

Possible effects include dissociation, dizziness, nausea, and raised blood pressure and heart rate. The FDA also lists abuse and misuse, psychiatric events, slowed breathing, and bladder and urinary tract symptoms, and the ketamine label warns that repeated use can injure the liver and bile ducts. Your clinician reviews these risks with you before any prescribing decision.
