More Than 'The Baby Blues'
Many new mothers experience the 'baby blues'—brief periods of mood swings, anxiety, and sadness right after delivery. But when these feelings don't fade, and instead deepen into a persistent sense of hopelessness, anxiety, or emptiness, it may be postpartum depression (PPD). This is a common and serious medical condition, not a character flaw or a sign of weakness.
Symptoms can range from overwhelming fatigue and changes in appetite to severe anxiety, irritability, and difficulty bonding with your baby. It can start anytime during the first year after childbirth. Recognizing that what you're experiencing is a treatable illness is the most important first step.
